Our Story

We launched in March 2020 as a facebook group, providing one another with support and resources as we tried to understand the science and make face coverings for ourselves, for others, and particularly for those in need. Very little was known about the efficacy of fabric face coverings at the time, but the evidence suggested it was worth a try.

As a group we experimented with designs, got feedback, and encouraged one another. This led to the development of the reverse nose fold (otherwise known as the Passmore Pleat, named after its inventor Sophie Passmore!) and a variety of designs based on the science as we understood it at the time. In June 2020 we merged with Masks for Carers, to create this website, where we attempted to gather what we knew about the best designs. For a snapshot of our thoughts at the end of 2020, you can still visit the old Design page.

Fortunately, there have now been immense efforts to understand the spread of Covid-19 and we know that wearing face coverings can play an important role in helping us protect one another. We no longer collate the information here, and suggest that you visit MakerMask.org for the latest research, which fabrics to use, and how to make masks.

For informal support and sharing of ideas, you are also welcome to join our facebook group.

As of Summer 2021, we are still matching those who are making face coverings with those who need them across the UK. Shout out to the volunteers who do this work behind the scenes, to Airtable for providing us with an account, and to Krishan at www.bitmate.dev who helped us develop the IT behind the donation system.
